I love it for many reasons. Tom actually acts his socks off in the first few episodes, as you point out.
And the first time I saw it as a kid (on a repeat - Season 17 is the earliest I saw premiere), the cliffhanger to part 4 blew me away. I'd seen and loved "The Time Warrior" and "The Sontaran Experiment", and suddenly there were *lots* of Sontarans. Even in "The Two Doctors" they only manage a pair of them. The impact of seeing them, little rod guns raised in the middle of the Panopticon, with that fantastic piece of music behind them, was electric.
I'd put it as one of the best Who cliffhangers *ever*, actually.
