Is this true at all ages ? Perhaps cons don't attract the 18-30ish age range these days, but I'm not sure they ever did. Would we recognise a gradual influx of 30-to-50ish-year-olds as new people in fandom ?
Meanwhile, I worry about the word "fandom". I often see fanfiction writers using it to mean either "the people who are fans of a particular show", i.e. Torchwood fandom, Harry Potter fandom, or for fanfiction fandom in general - but they don't seem to have any awareness of or connection to the wider world of conventions, SF fanzines, etc., what we would refer to as fandom. It's like two separate worlds, but both call themselves "fandom".
