Star Trek (11)

A bit of background - The last Star Trek movie I enjoyed was First Contact (or as most people know it, the Borg one) which is also the only Star Trek movie out on DVD that I still wish to buy.

I refuse to buy the 9th and 10th films. I'll watch them again if someone loans them to me, and who knows, I may re-evaluate my position, but for the moment I feel that Paramount got my money at the cinema, and they ain't gettin' another cent outta me for those lacklustre pieces of crap. I felt dissatisfied while viewing them, and by their respective finales was feeling quite cheated at what we were being given. Overlong, uninspired episodes that weren't even internally consistent and hoped to disguise what they were by wearing tarty clothes and talking dirty.

So, the new film. It's good. It's not mindblowingly brilliant, but it's enjoyable, escapist fun. The only aspect of the plot I could have done without was actually necessary for what they wanted to do, and my dislike of it was simply down to over-use by the franchise. Here it was used to the film's, and franchise's, benefit.

The crew were likable, as they should be. Each of the main cast getting their moment to shine. I'm not sold on the new James T. Kirk, but it's not like I'd be against the actor reprising the role. In fact I hope that he gets the chance.

Well worth a look.

7/10

Did you get Chekov?
For the most part the actors all had something of their character's original actor or were Simon Pegg, so who cares?). All Chekov gave me was a Russian accent. Walter Koenig was so much cooler >.

Actually no, they made Chekov very good at his job. Beaming people as they were falling, to name just one. And none of that annoying claiming-everything-as-a-Russian-invention schtick.

Not *yet*, anyway...

(I liked new-Chekov a lot, but I admit I'm not a major Trek fan and I don't remember old-Chekov very clearly.)

Captain Pike clearly has a sense of humour--he gets the guy who can't say "V" to make an announcement about Vulcan! OK, I liked post galaxy Quest (Never give up, never surrender) post Babylon 5 (If I am going to die, I am taking you bastards with me!) Star Trek. So do you reckon it could win a Ditmar?
