Yep, I have no problem with Conflux as writers cons, though I have suggested that they make that clearer in their advertising.
By looking like a general SF con, but catering mainly to writers, they miss out on two groups. There are interstate fans that went and became disappointed because they were expecting a more general con, and writers who think it'll be another fan con with not enough writing stuff for them.
However I have heard up-and-coming writers in other states holding up Conflux as an example of a good con, and knocking their local cons for 'not doing it properly like it used to be done.' Most of these folks have been around for five years or less.
I've actually had people approach me and ask me to set up a general SF con group in Canberra, ala Continuum. I am not that insane.
