FWIW, I find second stream, random direction, and sprinkler syndrome can all be avoided if you briefly separate the sides of the opening of your urethra before starting. The idea is to unstick them if the opening's been partly gummed up. Just pull back the left and right sides of your glans with two fingers; best practised when you can see what you're doing of course.
