Good movies & TV shows for girls?

Been meaning to ask this question for a few weeks. Can anyone recommend any movies or TV shows with solid and clever female characters? Preferably in the lead role, but solid supporting characters are okay as well if it helps expand the range.

I know it's going to be a couple of years before MaybeZoe sees any of it, and even longer before she comprehends what she's seeing, but getting a list now will give me time to hunt down and buy them.

Prefer genre stuff, but anything that has good characters and storytelling will do. She's already going to have some great female role models in her life, but wouldn't mind having some cool stuff to show her. Plus it can't be bad for Lex, either.

Good grief, has no one mention Avatar: Last of the Airbenders yet? Not to mention it's upcoming sequel is meant to have a female protagonist? :D
I think most of the DC animated series and movies are surprisingly free of all the issues the comics have. I hated Inpector Gadget, but god did I seriously think Penny was the best thing ever.
Anime, I still find so much of it "problematic" as someone put it. None of those women are me, or even close to being me. There was a real sense of disconnect with anime and its portrayals of "girls"
I still think one of the best recent Disney moves has to be Lilo and Stitch.

I'm not surprised: I'm a male anime fan and I often have serious problems with the portrayal of girls and women in a lot of anime.

A sequel series to Avatar - The Last Airbender? I am so there! The original had some solid female characters, too, as you mention.

I've never noticed a 'helpless female' schtick in the DC animated stuff. And I really loved that they played on that with the almost relationship between Batman and Wonder Woman. At one point they're on a rooftop, and she's basically saying they should go out. Batman says he doesn't date because his enemies would try to get to him by hurting those close to him. Wonder Woman crushes a lump of stone with her bare hand, and asks for his next reason :)
