We've got a thunderstorm. I like thunderstorms. Judging from the lighting/thunder lag, it's about 4km off and moving away. But we've still got the rain happening, so that's good.
I love storms, the wilder the better. I've just been told that Augusta (a summer kind of town right on the coast) is fantastic in winter cos there's gales and storms and rain and hail... and I want to go! ;-)
I've only heard one other person refer to Huey in regards to rain, and he usually says "send 'em down huey". He also refuses to reasonably explain the origins of the expression. Do you have any explaination?
Apparently there was a huge lightning storm off the coast near Sydney last night. A guy in Sydney reported that even though he couldn't hear any thunder the sky was lit up by lightning flashes at a rate of nearly one per second for quite a while. Yowza!
There's a mix of explanations - the basic one being it's a call to the Australian Rain God.
It predates the first world war, but most explanations for it sound like furphies. I think my favourite was about an amateur meteorologist called Huey who was highly accurate at predicting rain. But there doesn't appear to be a definitive beginning.
I've heard it often enough, but then a lot of my uncles are farmers and are from the depression\WW2 generation, so maybe it's just an older generation thing. But definitely "Send 'er down, Huey".
