Geek Anthems

It's a good year for the geek anthem. It's only a month or two since I linked to Fuck Me, Ray Bradbury and now we have Geek And Gamer Girls by Team Unicorn.

Nice to that both geek songs are by women, too. It seems the fangirls are doin' it for themselves :)

Have there been any other geek songs this year that I've missed?

See it's interesting you said that bc i quite like the geek and gamer anthem, but a lot of ppl i know have a problem with it bc of the whole sexulizing girl geeks thing...

I get that, but if you take away the visuals, the song still works. So are they complaining about the song, or just the clip?

I'm half asleep so may be wording this badly, but complaining that it sexualises girl geeks assumes (to me) that the girls either (a) were made to wear the costumes, or lack thereof, or (b) are wrong for being geeky and sexual.

I get the argument against sexualising geek girls, there's that whole subtext of 'if I show you my body can I be allowed to hang out with the boys, please?' But there's no allowance made for if the geek girls want to express themselves in this way for no other reason than it pleases them.

Put another way, well, if we're going to complain about this, we should be arguing for stopping corsets and revealing costumes at conventions.

I hope that made sense, I've been up since 4:30 after a bad night's sleep.

Did you end up seeing the 'Game On' vid from The Guild? Not entirely geek girls but a reasonable number.

Been meaning to check that out properly. Was too wrecked to appreciate it at the con.

So you don't have to go look it up. (I know you can but save the time)

I still love that video. I have no problem with the girls sexualising themselves. Its apparent their doing it for their own benefit and enjoyment. Also squee for someone cosplaying Pyslocke. Not to mention Katie Sackhoff & Seth Green.
I'm also kind of amused by the juxtaposition of the team against the background 'dancing' geekboys.
The nearly naked scenes do seem a bit like a 'for the boys' imagery, but taken in conjunction with the rest, it really has more of a 'Damn we're hot, we game, we geek and we're dead sexy" vibe.

My only problem with the nude American Beauty bits of the video is that they're over-used. The gag works once, then it just gets a bit stale, especially with the same comics etc. coming towards the camera every time. If they varied the comics or something, it might work better.

I have to say that this is a BIG improvement on the original lyrics.

And while I take foley-elf's point about sexualising girl geeks, I actually found it to be sexualising their intelligence as well which, again, is an improvement if still far from ideal.

Plus the ladies were clearly having fun making it. :)
