Santa

Well, I was out today with mum, doing the banking. As we entered the shopping centre, I glanced down and saw that they had their Chrissy set-up done, and there was a Santa on the throne.

I knew I was going to miss playing Kringle this year, but it didn't hit me how much I was going to miss it until I saw someone else in the part I cherish and love so much. It's so much more than a role for me. That's why I'm so good at it.

That's why I'm not doing it now. I simply can't do a consistently good job.

I was walking around today quite badly, both legs feeling like knives had been shoved through them in multiple places. I may be fine one day and barely able to walk the next. I'd push myself to do it, but the reason I'm not is I don't want to risk screwing it up for the kids. They make it worth it, but it's a bloody tough gig, even when you're feeling 100%.

If Santa can barely walk to or from the throne, or suddenly staggers off to one side and crashes into a wall, that ain't good for anyone.

But today I was reminded of something else. I have said for the last two years that Santa-ing was the only job I had loved as much as droving. I've never stopped missing droving. Having to stop was like having a part of myself torn away. I've always described it as like losing an arm.

Today I realised for the first time that I don't have Santa either, gutting me completely.

And now I know what it's like to lose my heart.

In a manly way, naturally.

Go and do some Freelance Santaring, you silly twonk.

*hugs*

I've done it before, and we are considering it, but I still have to be up to getting around without the stick to do it okay. That's not terribly likely.

Plus on thirty degree days, in the suit, by the time I get to a location, I may not be up to doing the job.

But I'm not ruling it out.

You have a damned good point there.

And an amazing head of hair.

Just don't get shot for being a terrorist suspect. ;)

C'mon, we can figure this out ...

Okay, it needs to be on a fairly mild to even cold day. Keep an eye on the weather reports. It needs to be in a place where someone can drive right up and drop you off at the point where you want to do the Santaring, and it needs to be somewhere with a seat. It also needs to be somewhere where there's lots of kids around but no other Santas. Somewhere not in the direct sun would also be tops.

Hmmm.

Sympathies. I feel the same way about acting, I've felt the same way about bookpimping when I've lost those jobs, and I hope to hell I never feel the same about writing.

Also big manly hugs.

At least you don't have to come to Werribee plaza any more and have your photo taken with me.

More manly hugs.

*hugs* from me too. (I mistyped *jugs* at first, but we all know my response to that question on your poll... :))

Is there something LIKE santaing you can do that doesn't require the physicality? Online santaing? Some other sort of seasonal cheer dispensing?

Here's hoping those useless bloody doctors figure it out and get your legs right again, anyhow.

Oh hun, I'm so sorry.
:-(
If you were here, I'd ask for you to be our family santa, and we'd take care of you properly so you'd be ok. Unfortunately it's a bit of a hike.
:-(

Any other families need a santa for an hour?

Danny, would you be ok with kids writing their Santa letters to you?

I know I'm a bit old to write, but I know there's a growing chunk of the fan community with kids now...

Buck up Boyo!

We all loves ya, Santa or No Santa.

[identity profile] smofbabe.livejournal.com 2006-11-28 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Sympathy from over the water.

Maybe you could do Santa-ing by webcam for shut-in kids?

[identity profile] arcadiagt5.livejournal.com 2006-11-28 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Now that is a very good idea!

In the meantime I'm going to be a dittohead: Hugs and sympathy, and continue to hope that your new doctors will find a way to beat this thing.

Agh, Danny, my heart hurts for you. Nobody should be torn away so viciously from those things s/he loves.

The domain free for you to register, all you need now is a web cam, a hosting service and someone to foot your bills :)

Seriously, the whole deal stinks :(

more hugs

Ah crap. I was in an opp shop last week and I saw a big ol' trophy, just like those sports trophies, but instead of a golden sportsman on to pit had a golden santa. It only occured to me last night that I could get it inscribed with something like "To Danny Oz - Santa's Best Helper" and send it to you as an Xmas gift.

I went back today to buy it but it was gone. :(

I dunno if you'd even like to have a Santery reminder about the house anyway.

[identity profile] fnork.livejournal.com 2006-11-30 08:54 am (UTC)(link)
I hate it when you have more than one issues.

many hugs, as well as many purrs to you, my dear chap.

P.S. I miss my bi-monthly dose of Danny love (or lurrve) I think a Canberran visit is in order before the end of January, no?

[identity profile] dalekboy.livejournal.com 2006-12-13 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry to have taken a while to get back to you... YES!

Dude, I would love some quality Julian time. You utterly rock!
