They actually did this experiment with spiders and drugs. It was featured in New Scientist many years ago (2000?). I have a T-shirt with the promo picture on it....four very bizarre looking spider webs.

I love how in the video, it's going along and seems more or less on the level, then the spider builds a hammock :)
