Tantalising

I just saw the start of The American Astronaut. If the rest of the film is as good as the first thirteen minutes, I've found another gem!

It's like a young David Lynch saw Firefly, and thought, 'I'd like to do something like that, but in black and white, with no money, and as a musical.'

EDIT - this is the first musical number from American Astronaut

always trust louise to find brilliant movies. she took me to see it and acmi had the theremin-playing astronaut of bourke st to amuse our ears while we bought tickets!
the rest of the film is better than the first 13 minutes. at some stage there are priestesses! and istr a cardboard box space ship! now i want to see it again!

Don't forget the free space cocktails!

I believe ACMI plays it roughly every month for Freaky Fridays.

Yes, the rest *is* that good. I made my cinema screen it a few years back, and the director personally mailed us some posters to use for publicity.

We love the American Astronaut. I didn't realise you hadn't seen it, or I would have lent you our spare copy, I would have thought [livejournal.com profile] mortonhall would have told you about its wonderfulness.
That scene, the toilet intimidatory dance scene, is my favourite from the film, but it is all excellent.

Yeah, *I'm* really surprised you hadn't seen it. Actually, I'm almost convinced that you *had*

Yep, it's totally full of awesome

I saw that at the Melbourne International film festival many years ago, and it is indeed strange and wonderful. My favourite quote from the film remains (and I paraphrase) "They make you wear that stuff!" "No, they *let* me wear it!"

Does this have an Australian release? QuickFlix doesn't seem to have it (*pout*) and they've been pretty good at stocking obscure titles, but typically only locally released stuff...

i saw it once in jb... but not to remember where or when. they might be able to order it though. are you in melbourne? see swirlability's comment above.

No, I'm in Perth.

I'm not too stressed if I don't see it - I'm just used to, every time someone recommends an obscure film, popping onto QuickFlix and adding it to my queue so it will eventually rock up in my mailbox some random day. It's handy!

I'll be the naysayer. I thought it was a bit crap. Found it boring and uninteresting.

I've only seen it the once, and I may have been in a bad mood.

**Finally** got around to watching the Arrr version of this I found online. It's certainly interesting, though rather WTF for about the first 30min. It certainly manages holds one's attention for the entire length, which says a lot since I usually wander off after I can't work out what's going on.

I now raise your American Astronaut and suggest you download or other wise get your hands on a copy of Sita Sings The Blues. It's got a Creative Commons Share License so it can be legally downloaded for free. You can find here if you want to download it. http://www.sitasingstheblues.com

*boggles*

This looks cool :)

Will have to wait until I have some spare Gb to download, but thank you! I'll probably get it down in the next couple of weeks.
