I have many black socks - all identical to each other (at least to start) - and many white socks, also all identical to each other.
I wash. I pair white with white, black with black, and don't bother to figure out which sock is the mate of the sock I'm holding. Some of the white socks, in particular, are getting very individualistic: one has lots of loose threads; one has a lot of stretch; and so forth. But hey - as long as it looks reasonably close, I don't give a damn.
