I'd never release naked photos of someone else without checking with them first. In fact I've had to ask one or two people in the last week or so if I could use their photos for a project. And someone else if I could use their photo when I put up the 'nudes' wallpaper shots.
Only exception to asking is if I was taking photos specifically for a project of some description, in which case the person would have signed a release form anyway. And they would at least get a copy of the photos or project so they would know how they were represented.
There are tricks to flattering photos. Some are things the photographer can do, some are things the model can do. I know one girl who looks fabulous in every photo taken of her, but at the same time she does the same pose for every damned photo and won't risk another.
I take a lot of photo and hope that one or two capture what it is I was trying to catch.
