When I was teaching, the acceptance of violence was one of the things that really worried me. Worst of all, it often came from people who knew better. For example, one school I was at had a lot of cops' kids, and they would tell their kids to hit back if bullied. They'd arrest adults for doing that, but were telling their kids to hit other kids.
I used to have policies of non-violence in the classroom. The kids weren't allowed to write about violence. They weren't allowed to act out violence. I'm realistic to realise that it probably didn't change any of them, but damnit, they deserved somewhere in the world that was violence-free.
