In one of my classes, during a unit on law and order, we did an opinion exercise with the question "If someone hits you in the playground, is is OK to hit them back?" One corner of the room was designated "yes", the other corner "no". Out of a class of about 25 kids, only two of them had the guts to go to the "no" corner. I could see some of the kids were unsure, but went to the "yes" corner because that's what all their friends were doing.
I asked the kids who went to the "yes" corner, why they'd hit back, even though it would probably get them in trouble (probably more trouble than the kid who hit them first, since it's usually the second kid that gets seen first by the teacher). "But Ms, if you don't hit them back, everyone will think you're a woose!" *sigh*
