It's funny. I have no problem at all readily envisaging life as a child during wartime -- or indeed as an adult in wartime.
My father grew up in England during the Second World War, many of my relatives were adult civilians and soldiers during that time, and much of the culture (books, radio, movies, music, television) I was exposed to was a direct product of that time.
The stories, the behaviour patterns, and indeed the zeitgeist, were all a living part of my environment as I was growing up.
