The version I rewatched was the director's cut, which I didn't mind. It still wasn't good enough that I'd bother owning a copy, but it was ok.
First time around, I was in the same camp as you, insulting crap. Second time around, it was more amusing, sitting there going, "You stupid bastards, you really think you're this good, don't you?", and laughing at the terrible, terrible physics, and the lack of actual thought - a ship a quarter the mass of the moon just exploded near Earth, let's go outside and watch the bits fall.
