Well, you can still play an elf. A good elf is heavily involved and works with Santa. Plus in all the times I was doing Kringle, only one child was scared of my elf, whereas one in twenty went bugfuck when I got too close.
I'm proud to say I resisted the urge to run screaming at some of the ones who were scared... Just :)
It is humbling and comes with a lot of responsibility. You're pretty close to a God to most kids, so you have to be aware of how you're acting with them the whole time. You don't want them feeling like FC has just blown them off.
I played Santa in a very William Hartnell (first Doctor Who) way, with just a touch of Tom Baker's joy in the little things. It seemed to go down well :)
