Terry Gilliam is one of my favourite directors, even though he made the Brothers Grimm. If I had remembered that he was the director going in to this movie, I suspect I would have been even more disappointed. I found it to be a film with a reasonable script and cool ideas struggling against the might of all it's male leads playing for laughs. The women play straight and it works, but the guys... *sigh*

I suspect if the film had been played straight, I would have enjoyed it much more. As it was, I found it irritating. It's the first film where I very nearly walked out of the cinema because it was so very annoying.

I'll probably rewatch it in a few years time and see what I think. I have hated films before and found them enjoyable on a rewatch, but somehow I don't think this will be one of them. I went in expecting good, dumb fun. Well, it was dumb, anyway.

Cheers,
Danny

Apparently the entire production got shafted royally from development to final cut by Harvey Weinstein - or at least that's what I read.

Thanks for the warning.

It was already dangerously low on my list of priorities given how often I get to the cinema. This way I won't be particularly disappointed if I miss it altogether.

we just got back from seeing it...

where it worked, it REALLY worked... but where it fell, it -REALLY- fell and that was what irritated me so much.

that and it was ridiculously too long.

That's what I thought may have happened. Another Gilliam project where outside sources affected the final product. Haven't people learned yet? Leave him alone and you usually get a good film.

The Weinsteins came on board at the last minute when funding fell through.

I'd totally forgotten it was a Gilliam film, as I said. So I was expecting something not much better or worse than Van Helsing - entertaining but not great. I went in expecting a silly fun Hollywood flick, so it wasn't like I had high expectations or had a negative view going in.

When Gilliam's name came up at the end, I was like "WTF?!"

One of the reason's I went to it was I'm sick of missing genre films that I like the look of. There's so many films where I'd like to see it and the next thing you know it's gone.

If we'd been a few minutes later to the cinema, we would have seen Corpse Bride instead. Bugger!

That sums it up. The really big problem is that so much of it just didn't work, that the genuinely good bits were swamped.
