Yeah I have issues with Buffy being a role model for girls too. Apart from the mentoring thing, she gets tricked by male vampires all the time, and then she's weak and makes errors when she's in love with Angel(?) It didn't impress me.
Glakes 7 is good, I also think of some of the Dr Who companions. Sarah-Jane, Nissah, Romana. The earlier companions are a bit "what do I do Doctor?" and the later ones are a bit scream your head off, but Ace wanting to blow things up all the time was cool.
