My parents have had to make a decision on putting one of our past family cat and dog to sleep and I if I was their position I think no matter how bad it felt it is always better to let them get put to sleep rather than have them suffer any day .
I'm such a softy I get really sad when we take the baby budgies to be sold in a pet shop, but none of my friends I know will ever take them as pets *sigh*.
