I do think a lot of people feel that not having a drink with them is a snub -- how do people react if you say that you will definitely have a drink with them, just a non-alcoholic one?
Drinking a light beer with virtually no alcohol is definitely socially acceptable in most of these situations - either a little light ribbing, or usually no reaction at all. Of course, doesn't help if you don't like beer.
