It is. Thank the Goddess. That type of pain is not something you want long term. I feel for people who live with pain - I don't know how they continue to function. Same goes for sleep - whenever I have insomnia and don't get enough sleep I am foggy and find it hard to work, I can't imagine how we can believe that homeless people who NEVER get quality sleep can even attempt to get themselves out of the situation they are in.
Speaking of 'giving people permission to like themselves':
I am doing some work at the moment on some training for our Team Leaders who work with young people (17-21 yr olds) to train them in helping people 'Change Wonky Beliefs' about themselves. It's based on CBT (cognitive behaviour therapy) and it is about getting the young people to recognise the negative thoughts and to change those negative thoughts into more positive ones. The Team Leaders are not counsellors but we can give them some activities and strategies they can use with the young people to help them turn their thoughts and feelings around.
I don't advocate that people MUST be happy ALL THE TIME - I don't think that is real either, I think it is about knowing what feelings are appropriate at a given time - and that if I am feeling something 'to the extreme' I need to think about what else is going on internally. (NB: usually for me the 'something else' is hormones... damn it!! :P )
