Re messiness - know what you mean! I would love to live in one of those minimalist, always neat, art deco inspired places but I'm such a pack rat I'm perpetually surrounded by stuff.
And it's not neat stuff, either. I don't put things back when I'm done with them, I don't put things away. And I love having piles of books and magazines on every available surface.
