Well I remember thinking how wonderfully he fitted in with the Doctor and Rose in "Boom Town" the following week, which led me to wonder what had happened in the episode I'd missed. And now that I've seen it, I feel like they've skipped some plot exposition.
Perhaps that's where the second wave of BBC Books came in.
