Re the storytelling, have you considered using a yarn style? If it's good enough for Henry Lawson & Frank Hardy it should be good enough for you. You could even record it orally & write it down later. My Father in Law is very good at yarns, his story about evangelist Oral Roberts in Richmond could win an award.
