While that's all very nice, when we were at Continuum last year, we put some serious effort in trying to talk to fans at the convention, to try and find people to go to meals with during meal breaks, or to chat to between panels, and quite simply, no one gave a stuff. The only room parties where people were being friendly were our own, or our friends' parties.
I'm glad I have a few friends already in the ES, because if it wasn't for them, I think my stay in Melbourne would have been really very lonely.
And looking back, same for the previous continuum we went to (er.... the one at the Hotel Y.)
I love cons, and I have heaps of friends already over east, so I expect I'll still be going to cons for a long time, and talking to strangers, but you know, sometimes it's nice when the strangers are nice back.
