Went to the dentist today so we could find out what was to be happening with my dodgy wisdom teeth. He had a look at the x-rays, had a look at the teeth, especially the bad lower right one.

Those tooths are not long for my gob! They are to be removed. All at once. With a brief (maybe afternoon, maybe longer) stay in hospital.

And a bill of $2500!

If anyone wants me, I'll be in the garage with a pair of pliers... *grin*

Wisdom teeth ... ah, fun. I remember having my wisdom teeth out. I remember waking up after the operation, feeling very groggy; my mother drove me back home (ie: don't take yourself there; get somebody else to act as taxi driver.) I also spent a few days throwing up because I kept swallowing blood (from the gaping wounds where the teeth had been). And my mouth was in no state to chew (expect lots and lots of fluids, not much solids. Steak is right out.)

Time to suck up to Sharon, since she'll have to nurse you through the recovery. Fun! Not ...

Hi Danny, Look, I perform a good service for friends. Having had a bit of dental work done myself and had my teeth removed, im more than willing to offer my assistence in removing your wisdom teeth.

I propose we remove one tooth at a time over a period of 4 weeks. so one a week. this means you can still eat on the other side with out a problem.

All I need is a pair of good strong new hooked pliers and a couple of nice burghley freinds to help hold you still.

I promise you you wont feel a thing.

*eek* Sorry to hear this. Not sure if you're more bummed about the mouth pain or the wallet pain :-> And I suppose now is not the time to gloat that all four of my wisdom teeth came in trouble-free and I still have all of them.

I had mine out whilst I was conscious. I don't recommend it!

Also do everything they tell you to...seriously. I probably ate something too soon after the surgery and "lost the clot", got myself a bone infection and that was Not Fun. At all.

Heh, I'm lying in bed right now recovering from having my wisdom teeth (+ one infected extra tooth) out last Thursday.

The first 2 days are pretty horrible but its pretty good then on.

is a pretty good guide for recovery, the bit about using frozen peas is brilliant cept I used them for 3 days after as recommended by my doctor. As other people had said follow the instructions they give you, it makes life bearable and makes you healing easier. Also buy lots of tissues, I found I bled for 3 days straight before stopping.

I'm torn on this. I decided to go the knock-me-out-and-do-the-whole-lot-route. Within a couple of days, the elephant man would have found me terribly attractive - my jaw swelled up so much that I had no neck, my chin connected to my chest. I remember when I could open my mouth enough to have chips - pushed them in one at a time. I'll never forget that salty sensation. Still ranks as one of the best meals of my life.

Yee gods that's alot of money .
I'd mine done at a dental surgeons office rather than going into hospital mainly due to huge expense of going to a hospital and an infected tooth that couldn't wait for a consultation and then having to wait for an appointment to go to a hospital(I think I would have tried to rip all my wisdom teeth with pliers) .

In the end it cost $400 for two teeth and I had the others pulled out later for same price after the first two teeth had recovered ,one think to have plenty of is gauze to stick between the gums where you teeth were and spend the first day on your back .

Having not had it done myself, I can only off sympathies and hear-say advice. Lots of painkillers, lots of rest and lots of well wishing - from all of us.

Heh, just makes me feel better that I never got any wisdom teeth at all! :-P And blah, blah, blah.... bring on the "ohhh you're not wise enough!" Seems I was smart enough not to get them - and to save $2,500 in the process!

Seriously though, sounds painful, icky and expensive... Make sure you are looked after..!

Personally, I'd go the plier route too, as long as you have something strong enough to take away the pain!

After I had mine out (under a GA) I was given Mersyndol Forte^tm to keep the pain away. It did, for three days, it also kept consciousness away for the same length of time.
Bean spent the time watching over me and doing jigsaws, which in itself was very good of her, but as I was still living at home with my parents (specifically mother), this puts her into the 'saint' category.

Well you beat me in the dental stakes! I'm just having a crown and it is only costing $1200.

Lots of good advice in the posts about how to recuperate afterwards. Having my wisdom teeth out was not fun and recovery was slow. Don't try and rush things, it simply doesn't work. Good luck!

Shop around is my suggestion.

I was quoted a similar amount to get my wisdom teeth removed after waiting 6 weeks to see that dentist who charged me $100 to tell me that. The earliest he could do it would have been a further 8 weeks later.

I went to another dentist who booked me in the following week and charged me about $700 for the same job. He did a good job with no problems.
