- Lex is simply not bothered by the heat to any noticeable degree. We haven't got air-conditioning in the car or house, and he seems fairly unfussed. Which is good, because I think people rely on aircon too much, and then are unable to cope without it.

- Lex also seems totally unphased by the pair of teeth working their way up through his gum. He's marginally more needy in that he wants more hugs, but is often quite happy to be left while we get on with Stuff(TM).

- Still struggling like a big wuss. Haven't crashed in the same way I normally do, but it's still draining.

- Back to swimming lessons tonight. Was good, but exhausting.

- Have you ever considered the great debt we owe panelists who actually care enough to do research for their panels? In preparation for the Doctor Who panel at this year's Swancon, today I watched episode 3 of Time and the Rani... I would rather be at the dentist having my four wisdom teeth pulled out.

- I still have to organise going to the dentist to have my wisdom teeth removed.

- Sharon is still beautiful.

- I would really like to be in a condition to go to the Post Office Friday to mail off some things, since I will have the car then. Time will tell.

- Last night I felt like crap and really wanted to watch something, so I picked Escape from New York. It was the first time I had seen it in around twenty years, and is still an enjoyable watch. It's funny how absolutely everyone seems to know Snake Plissken.

Sometimes the research is just as enjoyable as the convention panel, Danny. Lots of books stacked up around me, lots of DVDs, lots of scribbled notes and a laptop burning a reversed corporate logo into my thigh... doesn't get any better than that.

I rather like the research too, and get rather annoyed when I haven't done as much of it as I feel I should have. Besides, it's amazing what new info comes up, even on an old topic, and surprising the little facts you can forget even on topics you know well.

Like you, I can be dragged onto a panel at the last moment and give a good account of myself, but I think it's too easy to sit around and think that one can always get away with that. It just becomes an excuse for laziness, and if you think you deserve to be talking to an audience about a topic, then the audience deserve a panelist who puts in the work.

Yep, definitely agree with your last paragraph there. I think that the combination of research and passion for a subject is an unbeatable combination. You've got to really like the subject. Doesn't work otherwise.

Plane, I'm afriad. If I'm to drive over, it means Sharon either using her holidays to look after Lex on her own, or her coming with me both ways. So it's not practical at the mo'.

As it is, all Sharon's holidays seem to be being taken up with trips to Melbourne, which is hard on her. In a year or three, the plan is to drive over and take the train back.

Aircon

I survived last year's heat wave without aircon (and *with* morning sickness), although it did involve a lot of lying still and putting t-shirts in the freezer when at home.
It is however, much *nicer* and liveable with aircon, plus my main concern is for the little one who falls into one of the prime categories for overheating and dehydration. He can sure sweat like a trooper too. And the heat is just crankiness city in the end. We've done OK so far because I try to nap with him on my bed during the day - feed him to sleep and then he will sleep there unwrapped as long as I'm still there. As soon as I move, he's up. It has made putting him down the last two nights very difficult though. Took an hour last night, and two hours tonight, because he will really only go down to sleep well if wrapped, and it's been too hot until late in the evening. Otherwise when I wrap him he just overheats really quickly and starts screaming. Tonight I fed him to sleep a couple of times, but as soon as I moved or put him in his cot he wakes up and starts crying ('cos he's hot and overtired). Likewise with the rocking him unwrapped; can get him to go to sleep, but as soon as I put him down ... ditto. So I didn't get to eat until 9:30 tonight, which was OK, but problematic last night when I actually started to feel faint for lack of food - maybe didn't eat enough during the day or something? I was a bit more prepared today though and made sure I had a big lunch.

I'm so glad I've managed to get Clara out of the wrap - I actually managed to put her down without even a sleeping bag this morning! Just tucked umder the sheet, and lying on her tummy where she's most comfortable when she's sick :(

One issue with the heat is it just makes us so less productive. Why lie around the house in frozen t-shirts when you could be doing interesting stuff?

Yes, I think that's the pshychological challenge. So I've tried to resign myself to the fact that I will be doing nothing but the basics over the next few days. Let's see if that drives me nuts first.
Josh will sleep unwrapped sometimes, but generally earlier in the day. Plus I don't think he's sleeping the best at all in the warm and discomfort, so one part of him is probably craving maximum comfort, ie. wrapping, but that's just too warm :(

BTW, I am trying (but not succeeding in the heat) to write down a story that insinuated itself in my head over the weekend - about the lobster I sent you a picture of. When it's done, I think you'll like it, if you're up for reading.

My overall rating for Time and the Rani is 2/10, even though the individual episodes rated around 3/10. This is a case where the sum is less than it's parts.

Look forward to it! I've just finished another book! Very happy. Still not reading as much LJ as I'd like, but if it's a choice between books, and people talking about their everyday lives, then books it is!
