For those that are interested, Links to my episode by episode reviews of the first season of Doctor Who. A story's rating out of ten was usually arrived at by averaging out the individual episode scores for the story, though occasionally that gets thrown to the wind.

Asides from Marinus, that's a pretty consistent season, quality-wise.

It'll be interesting in a few year's time when I actually get this finished, to see which season I rate the highest.

When Pip & Jane Baker are complaining about changes to their story making it stupid, (and they're right!) you know you've got problems.

What got changed? As far as I knew, that script was pretty much locked down by the time Cartmel came along.

JNT and Cartmel put in all the mixed metaphors, not to mention the spoon playing. The story would have been a hell of a lot more watchable without the over-abundance of mixed metaphors.

That said, nothing could save it from the fact that there were no likable characters in it, including the Doctor, and the Rani's plan is fucking stupid.

I think I missed or have forgotten that bit. Certainly he annoyed me when he sent up the 'kiss your hand and then touch it to the rock' ritual of the lakersans, by smacking his hand against the rock and obviously hurting himself. And actual attempt at giving some sort of depth to the 2D race, and it then gets used as weak sight gag. *sigh*

In the next story, Sylv doffs his hat to a piece of wrecked machinery at the start and end of the story. Which is less annoying than Mel not spotting the huge bright yellow robot in the pool!

I'm pretty sure in this one, the Doctor comes across a charred corpse of a young Lakertyan woman, is really sad, says something to Rani-disguised-as-Mel, and then when he leaves he bizarrely doffs his hat.
