Just a reminder that women's nipples in art should be covered, lest we head down the slippery slope towards the death of civilisation as we know it.

Personally, I'm in favour of the death of civilisation as we know it.

Las Vegas? Upset with nipples?

What is the world coming to when painted nipples offend people but having pawn shops that buy wedding rings to help feed the obscene desperation of the many while filling the pockets of the few is considered inoffensive?

Oh yeah, you said. It's coming to the end of civilisation as we know it.

My politics a little leftish, can you tell?

That's what got me. Las Vegas!?!?!?? I'm stil trying to figure that out.

Brings to mind Stephen King's The Stand though.

What in particular about The Stand? Haven't read it.

I do like that the article points out that this same town ran a 'What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" campaign at one point. Yeah, so painted nipples will lower the moral tone of the place.

The fact they didn't even ask the artists back to paint the pasties on annoys me no end. The stickers look crap, and just whacking them on there is disrespectful to the artists.

Unless I am getting my SK's mixed up (which is always possible), it *is* about the end of the world, but eventually a whole bunch of survivors end up in Las Vegas, and it's the whole religious zealots vs the hedonists thing.

Las Vegas? Upset with nipples?

Las Vegas is actually an oddly conservative place. The styles of acceptable hedonism are very tightly prescribed. Despite the people handing out cards in the street advertising escort agencies, it was also the only city I've been to in the US where I was advised against wearing my d-ring chain shirt; I did anyway, but certainly got less welcoming looks than I had in San Francisco, or would have expected in New York or Ann Arbor.

Our Vegas taxi driver was certainly a very dyed in the wool Republican (Australians are Good Friends of the US, Obama is destroying the economy, etc etc etc).

And once you're more than a couple of km from the strip, you're suddenly in bland suburban sprawl America. I queued in a post office for a little while, then went walking in search of busses or taxis - I could have been anywhere.

Well, that shirt is pretty offensive and confronting... WTF?!

people handing out cards in the street advertising escort agencies...

said cards have blobs or stars photoshopped over the nipples.

Ooh, I forgot about that. Yes, the pasties are everywheeeeere!

From: [identity profile] vegetus.livejournal.com

I don't understand pasties, they look stupid and you don't need much imagination to guess what's underneath.

From: [identity profile] dalekboy.livejournal.com

But nipples and areola are things of evil. So if you cover them, it reduces the evil.

Oh, but they're only evil on women. Male nipples are pure and good.

From: [identity profile] mireille21.livejournal.com

Yes, our evil evil nipples, that feed and nourish our young. WTF?

From: [identity profile] dalekboy.livejournal.com

Actually, no, not useless.

Various bits of research show that men can and do lactate. In fact historically there was cases of men who lost their wives who went on to breastfeed their infants successfully.

The big issue is cultural. There's an tribe where the men do the breastfeeding and child-raising while the women do other work. Compare this to our culture where you still get guys who refuse to change a nappy.

I didn't try it with Lex because the research I'd found suggested that male milk wasn't as good for the child. Further looking into it suggests that it's actually got a lot more protein that female milk.

So no, not useless, just bound up in bullshit and cultural issues.

Oh I get it...

If something is for a functional, useful purpose (like feeding babies) it's evil. But something that is for show (like pasties and male nipples) is all good.

Sounds like Las Vegas thinking!

From: [identity profile] santeriagrrl.livejournal.com

Exactly how are pasties less offensive and less suggestive than nipples, the things that feed babies? I love how warped out sense of decency is.

From: [identity profile] dalekboy.livejournal.com

It's crazy, isn't it?

It's like movies. You can torture people, shoot old ladies in the head, blow up children, but don't show a breast, that's a terrible, disgusting thing to do.
