Given I have periods where I'm not up to doing much, I've been catching up on various shows and the occasional film. Here are some of what I've seen and thought...
X-men 3 is kind of disappointing. I could have handled the kind of ordinary story if there hadn't been such huge and obvious plot-holes, continuity problems, and logic errors. It failed to engage me the way the other two did, and it's very unlikely I will bother owning a copy.
Evil Aliens however I may well buy when it gets cheap enough. A low budget British flick, the title says it all. The aliens aren't here to invade or steal our water, they are here to do nasty stuff because they can. A gory comedy, it's been compared to Bad Taste, though not by me. It also has one or two moments and ideas that are just inspired.
Total Recall 2070 is low budget, but an interesting universe that mixes the Bladerunner and Total Recall universes in odd ways. So far I've seen the pilot movie and two episodes, but it's managing to keep my attention.
Torchwood episode one was good. Episode two was bloody ordinary. Three was not a bad idea but lacked something. Four should have had more oomph. Episode five, Small Worlds, was great. Dark, nasty and Captain Jack was finally worth watching on screen. Sorry to all the Jack fans, I love the character too, but prior to this story, anyone could have filled that role. Anyone could have filled this episode, too, but Barrowman actually got something to do. Watching a new PJ Hammond story was worth the series' existence alone, and all I have to say is, give Hammond a new dark fantasy series. What a writer!
Torchwood is going to really need to lift its game if I'm going to think of it as more than a poor British X-Files and even consider buying it on DVD.
Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip however is good. Not brilliant but certainly good enough to keep me hanging out for more.
Battlestar Galactica keeps going from strength to strength. It is one of the very few series that I would recommend everyone watch.
Drawn Together season two is kind of average. It did most of what it could or needed to in the first season, and I only started downloading to see the episode that wasn't shown originally. That episode was suitably wrong, the rest have been... either trying too hard or not hard enough. I'm enjoying it, but only just barely enough to to keep me watching.
Just caught up with the first episode of Boston Legal and loved it. The characters were great, fun to watch and entertaining. Shatner puts in a great performance and shows why he's still around after all these years, having successfully reinvented himself yet again.
Supernatural's second season is chugging along nicely. They've expanded the universe but haven't overdone it, and the writing of the characters continues to give me a laugh, while the writing of the monsters is often well done.
Which reminds me, I've finally seen The Night Stalker and The Night Strangler, the two telemovies that launched the series Kolchak: The Night Stalker. They were good. It was really nice to see brand new (to me) Night Stalker. The stories are, like the series, made both by Kalchak himself, and the various characters he meets.
Also saw the film The Librarian on DVD. Some may enjoy it, but I found that I totally failed to engage with the characters, and that massive logic flaws within the universe (keeping items that will kill you or unleash 1000 years of evil upon the world in places where you could actually knock against them) further helped distance me from it. And there's a second one. And it's calling to me, based on my urge to give things a chance. I'm going to do my best to resist.
Lastly, Babylon 5: The Lost Tales is filming and... I couldn't care less. Don't get me wrong, I love the B5 universe, even if its creator is a bit of arrogant prat. But geez dude, play another song! The original B5 was good for its time, by comparison to the stuff around it. You're going to have to have really worked hard and improved your game to even be in the same league as Battlestar Galactica and even let alone in the same ballpark.
And I don't think you're up to it.

I can't wait to see Torchwood 1x05, i keep hearing awesome things about it - and i think you're right, so far they've done little to make Jack... well.... Jack.

Perhaps that's where the second wave of BBC Books came in.

I'm just not sure Torchwood knows what it wants to be and is still figuring it out. Each episode (with the execption of the first) does seem to be better than the last, and I always look forward to seeing the next one.

As for The Librarian I remember seeing it in EzyDVD a while ago but wasn't going to spend $25 on it. My video library has the second but not the first (go figure).
And since I haven't hired a video in years when do you think the language will stop calling it a video library?

You're still hiring 'a video' in the strict sense of the word, just the transport has changed.
(like people download video files)

Shows what they know.
