( Aug. 2nd, 2010 05:18 pm)
Basic details are born 2:40am, Monday 2nd August. Weight 4.135 Kg (9lb 2oz), length 50cm. Lungs & appetite - huge!

Name - maybe Zoe, not sure yet whether she's a Zoe, or an Elizabeth, or a Tigerlily Sunshine-Bell.

Labour was around 3 and a half hours, go to woah. Shaz was in a little more discomfort than with Lex, but needed no pain relief. Both mum & bub are doing fine.

She was due today, and is still not here. This has allowed us to catch up on a couple of things that we were behind on, now we are only behind on 4,507,291 things.

This would also appear to really be the year for everyone to have babies. Congratulations to those that have, and those that are still waiting. Shame there's no child-minding set up for the WorldCon.

Paperwork has been sent off for the mortgage, now we wait.

I know some folks are waiting for photo updates of Lex and myself... keep waiting, they'll get here eventually.

I have lost email again. Repairs are underway. As previously stated however, if you have anything that needs an answer in under a week or five, ring. Seriously. I'm this far behind and the baby isn't here yet! Hell, I've barely glanced at the last two Doctor Who magazines!

My old and ever faithful Canon Powershot has finally died. It was a good little camera and survived through many dusty, sandy, and wet environments.

I now have the two Kirk Alyn Superman serials to show Lex. The two old Batman ones will have to wait until I have money, or Lex is working.

Been having sex dreams all week. I suspect my subconscious is trying to make up for the fact that soon I'll have two children and no hope.

Sharon is doing fantastically well for a woman who is very pregnant indeed. But she will be glad to be rid of the small planet hidden in her belly. And she's very sick of the swollen ankles.

Oh, we raced out and saw Inception last night. It was good. That will likely be our last visit to the cinema for a fair while. Cooma has one cinema, open three days a week. That, combined with two children under two, does not bode well for frequent cinema trips.

so so so sosososo busy, and I have little to show for it. But on the plus side, things should improve once we have a newborn in the house as well.

I shall likely become slightly more busy when I get email working again *grumble*

Bernadette, my biological mum is visiting so she can be onhand to help mum with Lex while Sharon's in hospital pumping out nipper #2. Bern and mum are getting on really well, and she's yet another guest who is really good & low maintenance. We've had a very lucky couple of months, but this is particularly lucky as this is far and away the most time my birth-mum and I have spent around each other. Would have been a shame if I'd wanted to strangle her on the second day.

In other good news, I just looked at the net for the first time in a couple of days and saw this link on Hespa's LJ - it's times like this that I really, really love fans. I wonder if we could get large groups of cosplaying fans to protest at everything these mongrels attend?

My favourite sign - Is this thing on?

Between...

- buying Sharon a car
- buying a house in Cooma
- and dealing with all the legalities with that
- and trying to organise things for the house
- various wonderful and welcome guests spread over June/July
- trying to pack and sort a house full of stuff, using Strokeboy™, Preggo Girl™, Ancient Lady™, and Mini Me™ (Trademark belongs to someone else... shhhh....), which is, to be honest, glacial in its speed
- Lex's epic, ongoing teething with his last four rear teeth
- and his recent penchant for waking at 6am with a pooey nappy
- and him not sleeping for the rest of the day, even though he's tired and cranky
- me taking Lex and mum out when I'm already tired, to give Sharon a break, leaving me even more tired
- me being a good month behind on replies and emails (I am getting through them slowly, but if it's important, don't email or SMS, ring!)
- trying to get ready for the WorldCon trip to Melbourne (I've yet to actually put my name in for panels, which is crazy)
- preparations for bub number 2
- and assorted other things causing delays

...we should be able to start watching our new box set of The West Wing (a present to ourselves for our 12th Wedding Anniversary) sometime in 2011.

Looking forward to it.

As I aged, my visual memory, which used to be pretty good, started to fade. Then I had my stroke, and it took me a while to realise that my visual memory had virtually vanished.

See, the way I used to remember people, things and events was as images in my head. Jocko used to tell people how I'd have a pile of unmarked video tapes, and then would go through them and pick out the exact tape I needed. To him it was identical to all the others, to me it was obviously the right tape. Read more... )

...well, unless you count my tweet reposted tweets, which I do... sort of... a bit. If my tweets weren't appearing here chances are you wouldn't be getting anything from me, it's just been that kind of time -

- migraines
- toddler
- house-hunting
- preparing for guests
- life throwing annoying and costly surprises at us
- packing in hope of moving some time this year
- etcetera
- etcetera
- and of course, etcetera

I've had many, many things I've wanted to write about, but if I have the brainspace I don't have the time, and if Lex gives me the time, I don't have the brain space. I've still been recording the films I'm watching, but taking the time to post them up hasn't been an option.

Anyway, so that's what's been happening. Will try to get another two posts up tonight.
April 1st, 2006, that's when the universe decided to play a practical joke on me - it gave me a migraine. One that lasted for two weeks. The upshot of which was that the effect on my brain was the same as a mini-stroke. Oh, how we laughed!

So, in a matter of weeks I went from being bouncing, energetic Danny to constantly giddy, no concentration Danny. What made it worse was that after months of waiting to see a neurologist, the one we got was pretty useless. He always seemed to disregard the migraine as a starting point for the problems I was having, concentrating instead on the giddiness, and basically suggested that I take it easy until other symptoms presented themselves so he could make a diagnosis.

It wasn't until a little while after we moved to Canberra that we got someone who joined the dots in a truly Sherlock Holmesian manner. Asking weird questions and putting my answers together. I still remember when he'd said he was 90% certain that I'd had a Basilar Migraine - one based around my brain stem - and I brought up something I'd forgotten to mention, that the scent of my body had actually changed, and he nodded and said that it was just more evidence backing up his theory.

Of course the first and most important thing to do after a stroke is to start retraining one's body and brain, something I hadn't been doing because I'd essentially been told to take it easy. I had started jogging a month or two before the diagnosis because my legs had been getting weaker, but I was basically ten months behind. The doctor we'd seen said that while there was no reason I couldn't eventually make a full recovery, these things are unique to each individual and I may not.

So, where am I at? Read more... )

Sharon has been having a terrible time settling Lex (he's teething - big, painful rear teeth), whereas I'm having some trouble, but nowhere near as much. I was trying to come up with anything I did differently, couldn't think of anything, but mentioned that I now always finish with the Venusian lullaby from Doctor Who. It's the one Pertwee uses to hypnotise Aggedor, the royal beast of Peladon.

No, really. I couldn't make that up.

Anyway Sharon tried to settle Lex tonight, and he would not settle. She headed off to resettle him again, and this time it worked! When she came down, I told her I was surprised, and didn't think he was going to settle.

She mimed patting Lex's back and then starting singing a rough version of... you guessed it! It's the easiest he's settled for her in a while.

Here's the only copy I could find on Youtube.

So been doing the Twitter thing, following famous people and friends I like, being followed by friends and the occasional stranger.

On Friday I put up a post that said, - Don't hate me because I'm beautiful. Hate me because I will short-sheet your bed at the first opportunity. Got a couple of replies from friends and I thought to myself, here's a little bit of creativity I can inject into Twitter for myself.

I've realised I need that creative outlet, no matter how small. It's basically why I don't visit Facebook very often. I like some of the games and stuff, but it doesn't make me want to do more than play them. It sucks at my time but doesn't give me an outlet for the things I need an outlet for. That's not going to keep my interest very long, no matter how much some of my friends who use it mean to me, and how much I like playing Scrabble.

So I basically figured I'd try to do a new Don't hate me because I'm beautiful. Hate me because... every day that I had net access ('cause I'll be damned if I'll pay SMS costs to Tweet). It's fairly light-on, but I figured I'd have fun coming up with stuff.

So yesterday I posted - Don't hate me because I'm beautiful. Hate me because that time you thought you'd misplaced your keys, I had deliberately hidden them. - I did it just before I started following Roger Ebert. Ebert retweeted three of his new followers, as he seems to do every day, I was one. Twitter weirdness follows... )

So, today I left Lex's room and called him to follow me and get something to eat. I got down the hall and nothing happened. Normally food over-rides almost everything else, but obviously not this time. I called him again. Still nothing. I called him a third time, then went to go get him. This is what I found... Had to make a trip to Belconnen today, with mum and Lex. I didn't take the stroller because on two previous occasions with Lex holding my finger as we walked, he's been fine.

And he was again today. We walked around for over an hour, and he was fine the whole time. I'm still amazed by this. I know he's a pretty good kid, but even so, we're out walking in a big, wide, interesting place with lots of shapes and colours and people, so I pretty much expect him to want to run off and explore everything. They're naturally curious, and everything is new, so of course they want to investigate.

But Lex is happy to hold my finger and walk along, twisting his head and body wildly in an attempt to take in as much as he can. The two points where he saw something he just had to get a better look at (balloons, and a random shop window), he grabbed my finger more firmly and gently pulled me in the direction that had his interest. So we'd have a look and then, because I knew he'd happily look at this stuff for an hour, I'd lead him away and he'd come with minimum resistance.

I've always been told that I was a really good, quiet child, and so far, that describes Lex. He usually only plays up when he's over-tired, or in discomfort, neither of which one can really blame him for.

So, maybe he takes after his dad in that respect. I wonder if he'll be a quiet teenager too, until he finally finds the social group in which he feels comfortable, and then look out world!

Travelled to Cooma this weekend to look at houses. Out of nine houses, eight of them would have worked for us more or less. I now have a rough handle on what the different 'Snowy homes' are, and know that anything marked as an E-Type snowy home will be too small. That's a major help right there.

But the important thing is, all the prices were fair, even when compared to one another. They were all good houses, and there was none of the knee-jerk "You want how much?!" that I get with... well 99.999% of Canberra houses. Cut for housey stuff )

Well, [livejournal.com profile] stephiepenguin did a post on pictures that she took during 2009. So I'm pinching the idea and doing the same. All pictures of people, many of whom are holding Lex for some reason, and they're in chronological order. Every photo was taken by me, or was pretty much entirely set up by me and then I had someone else press the button.

I was quite pleased when I compiled this. I had felt like I'd hardly taken any pictures this year, but in actual fact I had hardly taken any travel pictures. There's plenty with people.

Goal for next year - more pictures of people (and hopefully some travel pics).

One of the things I've become conscious of in recent months is my priorities. They haven't changed, I'm just aware of them now.

While my health and fitness has improved slowly but steadily since the stroke, I still have a fairly limited amount of spoons, and even when I'm doing well, it doesn't take much to steal them all if I'm not careful. I've been tending to beat myself up a bit for not getting things done, but then recently I realised how it is I work my limited resources. Read more... )

In the last week, Lex has suddenly hit his stride with a bunch of words, symbols, and concepts coming together for him. He's understood sign language previously, but for whatever reason wasn't using it, but this week that changed.

He's now doing his own adaptation of the sign for book by clapping his hands together as if he were shutting a book. Sometimes he will accompany this with the word "dat" which is his most common word for book. The next most common words for it are "dot" and "dook."

He also signs for food now by opening his mouth and then putting his hand over it. Very handy one, that. He sometimes also combines the sign with the word "mum."

"Shluck" is his word for sock.

"Car" is now used for pictures or actual cars.

Of course he already had "Kal" and "mum." Any words he has can get used for other things. For instance, the other day he named my nipples. One was called "mum" and the other was called "Kal."

Other times he just says the words because he likes the feel of the word in his mouth, something I also do. But all the words mentioned have a pretty consistent use associated with their respective objects and lifeforms. I tend to wait until I've seen an ongoing use and connection before I credit him with actually understanding the word.

Today, for the first time, he said "da" as he pointed at me. Will be looking out to see if that's repeated or it was a one off.

Amongst things Lex has learned or experienced in recent weeks are -

- shaking his head (it doesn't actually mean no, I think he just likes the cheap high)

- walking (he did a proper walk last night for all of half a dozen steps - this is how the world ends!)

- his first true word, as in a word that is solidly identified with one inhabitant of our house (the word is "Gahr!" or "Carh!", which is Lex's attempt to say the dog's name, "Kal")

- interior design (he keeps rearranging all the chairs)

- the sign language for milk (it's a two handed milking-a-cow motion, only he does it with one hand and so it's hard to distinguish it from him waving, but you can tell the difference if you really look)

- two big teeth finally breaking the skin after months of bothering him (both have come through in the last day or so, on the left side top and bottom)

- bubbles (a really good way to distract him so he doesn't scream while you're wiping his face after eating)

- swings and slides (both of which he adores)

- paper planes (threw the plane back and forth around him, then let him have it. It became the most precious piece of paper ever, for about half an hour)

In other news, it feels like everyone I've ever known is having kids at the moment. Just heard about another. Will be interesting seeing the direction all the kids of the fannish and alternative folks go over the years. I suspect a few rebellious Liberal voting accountant or sporting types will pop up.
