Now, when Father Christmas asks you to act as his stand-in, it's a pretty big thing you're taking on. You're representing the big guy to the public, so there are certain expectations built in. One of the big ones is - you care - care about the kids, care about the adults, care about doing the job right.Read more... )
I meant to put this post up a few weeks back, but now is more topical, I think.

I'm heading down to Melbourne in a few days to go to the Discworld convention.

Now I had wondered about flying down. It's quicker, easier and is less likely to knock me about. And if over time I get to a point where driving is too difficult then I'll have to look at my options. Looking at my options will include looking at the financial side and the greenhouse impact. As I just said in someone else's LJ, you want the governments to change their ways, you have to change first, and make a bit of noise about it. It's only when they see that it's a political issue that they'll act definitively.

After my recent trip to Parkes, I had a good idea of travel time, the fuel consumption of my car, what that worked out to in a dollar amount, etc. So before I look at the cost to the planet for a single trip to Melbourne, let's just look at the time and money going one way.

DVD addiction is becoming a serious problem. If you're a film or tv buff, it's especially difficult to control the urges to buy everything that comes out. There are films and tv shows that I literally waited decades to be released on videotape. It never happened. Now they're bringing out anything and everything on DVD, to the point where you're spoiled for choice. There's always something you can pick up.

For many of us suffering a DVD addiction (or as I call it, DVDA) it's hard not to buy the discs. These are things you've wanted to see all your life, things that previously you only got the chance to get once in a while. Now they're all out there, seemingly at once. If you don't buy them now, you may miss out on them. And after having waited so long to see these things, the last thing you want is to miss out on them now they've been released.

This leads to a few different problems. One is the inevitable lack of money. Another is having lots of unwatched DVD's that you'll get to 'one day.' The third is the lack of space. The last is being caught with really embarrassing crap on your shelves.

Today, I'll share with you three simple techniques I've learned, in the hope of helping you with your addiction. If we're lucky, at the very least it'll save you some money.

I recently purchased the original series of Battlestar Galactica on DVD. All I actually wanted was the pilot movie, as a historical piece, one of the things that sprang into existence thanks to the monster that was the first Star Wars film. However, to buy the film version of Galactica was going to cost me $35, whereas to buy the series would only cost me $27 and while I had almost no interest in watching the series, this would give me a chance to re-evaluate it. Plus I now had access to bonus features not available with the film.

One of the things I try to do when I watch a tv series or film is take into account the time in which it was made.Long article behind the cut... )
